Assessment

Assessment

BIS Classic employs a 100-point marking scale. There are three types of assessment tests - ongoing, mid-term and principal. The principal tests' aim is to give a transparency in assessing the performance of both students and teachers on a semi-annual basis.

According to the British educational standards, pupils are officially assessed at the end of key stages 1, 2, and 3 (these tests are called SATs (Standard Attainment Tests). At the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6), students have state exams (tests) in English, Mathematics and Science. At the end of Key Stage 3 (Year 9), teachers are expected to assess students' performance in all subjects. When in Key Stage 4 (Year 10), apart from the usual assessments students also take International GCSE exams. Right after completing Key Stage 4, pupils are grouped according to their interests and competences, taking into account all test results, their class performance, quality of their homework, and teachers' observations.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (International GCSE) is an international two-year academic programme for students aged 14-16 (Year 9-10), equivalent to the British GCSE. During Year 9, pupils can choose the subjects to study and these will be the subjects they will take for IGCSE exams at the end of Year 10. There are 4 compulsory subjects at BIS Classic, namely, English, Maths, Business Studies and a subject from one of the following areas - ICT, History, Economics or Modern Languages. BIS Classic is an approved Edexcel center and as such it offers students the opportunity to take as much exams as they want towards their IGCSE qualifications.

Students who have passed their International GCSE exams can proceed to GCE Advanced Level (A-Levels) in Grade 11 and 12. At the end of Grade 11 students take 4 compulsory exams in English Language, Maths, Business Studies and a subject from one of the following areas - History, Economics or Modern Languages for AS-Level (Advanced Subsidiary Level), and in the middle of Grade 12, students take A2-Level exams on the same subjects. The final GCE A-Levels mark is the total score of AS-Level and A2-Level exams.

In 2010 BIS Classic introduced the International GCSE and GCE A-Levels in Bulgaria. In 2011 BIS Classic became the first Bulgarian school where British Curriculum is taught in all key stages for acquiring international educational qualifications.

Education

  • The prerequisite for development of a new educational paradigm is the understanding of the necessity of a different type of education and upbringing in a different type of school. The main focus is the formation of each youngster as an author of innovative ideas.
The spiritual, intellectual and physical development at BIS Classic aims at maximizing each child's potential with the perspective of a successful social integration. The necessary partnership in the process of creative thinking, the support in the individual discovery of knowledge and the formation of a personal approach in their application in various situations are all implemented within our new methodology. It subtly develops the potential of children while preserving their own individuality. The existing system of achievements motivation, is directly linked to a deep, continious as well as a profound motivation, ambition and success.
